The S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution became a phenomenon in Russian medicine: simultaneously it connected in its structure a large research institution in Moscow, 11 branches located in the biggest cities of Russia: St.-Petersburg, Kaluga, Volgograd, Tambov, Orenburg, Cheboksary, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk; a research experimental production enterprise; an experimental factory for ophthalmic products and medical training centers.
Advanced microsurgical technologies, developed by the Fyodorov’s School were a basis for the establishment of the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution. For thirty years, the Institution became a leading center of innovations in the medical industry. The latest diagnostic and rehabilitative technologies, innovations of laser and micro-invasive surgery are available to patients in all regions of the country through a network of branches. The Branches of the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution are medical centers for treatment and consultations, as well as educational and research regional centers. Diagnosis and treatment for all types of ocular diseases in adult and children are carried out at a high technological level using modern devices in the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution. During 30 years, more than 19 million patients were examined and over 7 million patients were treated. Annually 300 thousand surgical operations are performed including more than 5 thousand patients of them are from Germany, Italy, Greece and other foreign countries. In Russia 33% are accounted for the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution of the total ophthalmic care. The Institution performs more than 60% of all high-tech surgical operations in Russia.
In the total surgical aid of the clinic, 85% are operations of the highest category of complexity with application of the latest scientific achievements. A constant active introduction of new technologies allows increasing the effectiveness of treatment.
The S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution is the largest base of the formation of scientific potential for Russian ophthalmology. Within the past 5 years there were prepared 10 Doctors of Medical Sciences and 86 Candidates of Medical Sciences, 80 monographs and textbooks were published, and more than 2000 scientific papers, 430 patents for inventions were received. There are issued 4 scientific journals. In the staff of the Institution are 102 Professors and Doctors of Sciences, 40 Honored Doctors and Honored Workers of Science of the Russian Federation. Yearly the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution is the organizer of seven major national scientific conferences with international participation. One of them is "Fyodorov Lectures" it is intended to perpetuate the memory of the outstanding scientist and the founder of the conference, Professor S. N. Fyodorov. Thousands of specialists are involved in each conference, prominent representatives of Russian and foreign ophthalmology gather to discuss recent achievements in the treatment of eye diseases.
One of the main traditions of the Institution is the transfer of accumulated knowledge to practitioners and young professionals. There is established the first network of regional training centers "WETLAB" in Russia with surgical training rooms, equipped with up-to-date devices, instruments and consumable materials. Every year, hundreds of surgeons from various ophthalmic institutions in the country are studied and trained in the latest techniques of microsurgery. In the training centers about 8000 ophthalmologists passed the education. Doctors from 30 countries of the world: USA, Europe, Africa, Syria, India, Libya, United Arab Emirates, Japan and others have certificates of training.
The Joint Russian-Chinese Ophthalmological Center was open together with the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution in China in the city of Daqing. During 5 years of the activity of the Centre more than 90 thousand patients (24 thousand of them children aged younger 14 years) were treated by Russian specialists, and 15 thousand surgeries were performed for patients with severe pathology of the visual organ. Within the Russian-Vietnamese governmental programs was opened ophthalmological center in Vietnam.
Noting the contribution of the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution in the development of world and national ophthalmology, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin said: "Founded by prominent domestic scientist-ophthalmologist and a true patriot of his country Svyatoslav N. Fyodorov, this Institution is rightfully considered as one of the most reputable, competitive research and treatment centers".
