Treatment of children

At any stage of development, from the child’s birth, eye diseases may be diagnosed that reduce the vision and require various treatments (conservative or surgical), dynamic observation, optical correction or functional treatment.

The Children Service of the Eye Microsurgery MNTK was established in 1984.

At present, the children’s department of microsurgery and functional eye rehabilitation includes:

  • children's diagnostic department for pleopto-orthoptic treatment;
  • children’s surgical department;
  • treatment of retinoblastoma in children.

Children's diagnostic department for pleopto-orthoptic treatment

The children's diagnostic department for pleopto-orthoptic treatment (department for improving impaired vision and strabismus treatment). The department is mainly focused on thorough examination of children with impaired vision, establishing the reasons for the vision impairment, taking into account the diagnosis.

The diagnostic department of the Eye Microsurgery MNTK is addressed by young patients with various diseases:

  • corneal disorders;
  • congenital and traumatic cataract;
  • glaucoma;
  • vitreous pathologies;
  • retinal disorders;
  • diseases of the optic nerve and the optical path;
  • eye neoplasms;
  • retinopathy of premature;
  • refractive disorders (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism)
  • strabismus, various types of amblyopia;
  • diseases of the lacrimal apparatus (dacryocystitis of newborns);
  • conjunctivitis and other inflammatory diseases of the anterior part of the eye.

The most common causes of vision disorders in children are refractive disorders (nearsightedness, hyperopia, astigmatism), strabismus and amblyopia. Naturally, such children need a correct selection of correction (eyeglasses, contact lenses, laser correction for some indications), functional treatment, mandatory dynamic observation.

Practicing scientists of the Eye Microsurgery MNTK have developed original diagnostic and treatment methods of eye accommodation for children with myopia, hyperopia, strabismus that are successfully used in our department.

After examination and treatment, children and their parents are given recommendations on the organization of the visual loads, including when working at the computer, on visual gymnastics and the use of computer programs designed to restore visual functions at home.

The availability of modern diagnostic equipment, the ability to find an approach to every child, to receive accurate information from children and their parents are the basis of correct diagnosis and correctly prescribed treatment. Highly qualified doctors, well-trained medical personnel and our invaluable long-term medical experience allow us to achieve high results in the treatment of children with eye diseases.

Children’s department of eye microsurgery

Priority directions of children's department of eye microsurgery are retinopathy of prematurity, surgical treatment of congenital eye pathologies in children, posttraumatic eye pathologies, strabismus, progressive myopia, retinal and optic nerve diseases.

One of the achievements of the children's surgical department of the Eye Microsurgery MNTK is modern microinvasive surgery of congenital cataracts in young children with simultaneous implantation of modern models of intraocular lenses (IOL) – cataract phacoaspiration with IOL implantation. The unique method of calculating the optical power of the IOL developed at the MNTK enables not only to individually determine the dioptric power of the artificial lens, but also to predict the optical result at long-term observation, given the age-related characteristics of the child's eye refractogenesis. Surgical treatment of traumatic and complicated cataracts and congenital lens subluxation is carried out using modern microinvasive techniques.

When a congenital glaucoma is suspected, a diagnostic examination of young children is carried out under Sevoran mask anesthesia, with measuring the intraocular pressure, determination of the dimensions of the anterior-posterior axis and the cornea of the eye, assessment of the structures of the anterior chamber angle and the condition of the optic nerve and ultrasonic biomicroscopy, when required. When a congenital glaucoma is diagnosed, surgical treatment is preferential, since medication therapy is ineffective. The choice of surgery depends on the stage of the disease and the structure of the anterior section of the eye.

In case of congenital and posttraumatic opacities of the cornea in the optical zone or keratoconus, the only method of treatment is keratoplasty. In cases of combined post-traumatic pathology, complex surgical intervention is performed: keratoplasty with simultaneous removal of traumatic cataract and IOL implantation. The use of preserved material according to the technique developed by the Eye Microsurgery MNTK significantly increases the probability of transparent engraftment of the cornea.
