Retinal detachment

Retinal detachment is a severe eye disease, which, in the absence of treatment, results in complete blindness. This is detachment of the retina from the vascular membrane. The retina ceases to function normally and the vision decreases dramatically.

Retinal detachment requires surgical treatment. A timely surgery (within several days) will recover the vision completely. However, the modern surgical technique will be effective even in very advanced cases.

REMEMBER! If the disease is neglected, there is a risk of chronic inflammation, development of cataract, and an eye may completely lose the ability to see. It is important to be vigilant especially for those people who have already had a retinal detachment in one eye. They should be periodically examined by an ophthalmologist. And if you have any suspicious symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Only a specialist can determine if you have a retinal detachment, what is its degree, will conduct all necessary examinations using modern high-precision equipment. The doctor will be able to recommend the necessary treatment based on examination results.

Patients with retinal detachment need urgent surgical intervention. The purpose of the surgical treatment of retinal detachment is to detect the retinal rupture and close it.

Currently, there are some treatment methods for retinal detachment. When the ruptures are small and not severe, the method of local buckling gives good results. In severe cases more complicated surgeries are required. Large or centrally located ruptures, as a rule, are accompanied by severe scarring, which prevents the retina from connecting to the vascular membrane. In such cases a surgery – vitrectomy – is needed.

Each intervention should be selected on a case-by-case basis and depends on the period of time that has elapsed from occurrence of the detachment, the size of the retina, how many ruptures it has, where they are located, etc. Depending on the case, the treatment may be conducted in one or more stages.

The interventions are performed by highly qualified surgeons of the world level from the vitreoretinal surgery and eye diabetes department using cutting-edge microinvasive technologies without incision of the eyeball, through a puncture, which does not require suturing. The postoperative period is easier and treatment outcomes are significantly better. Surgeries for retinal detachment are made under general or local anesthesia using an operating microscope. Surgical rooms for vitrectomy surgeries are fitted with the most modern equipment of the best producers.

In the morning of the day when the surgery is made pupil dilation drops are used. You can also be offered a mild sedative to help you relax and relieve anxiety.

In the surgical room, you will be attended by a surgeon, his/her assistant, an operating room nurse, an anesthesiologist and a nurse anesthetist.

Vitrectomy The total treatment period is 14 days (preoperative examination 2-3 days, surgery – on the 4th day, postoperative follow up – 5 days).

Patients with severe complicated myopia are indicated laser preventive treatment of retinal detachment.

Laser preventive treatment of retinal detachment The total treatment period of the both eyes is 3-10 days (preoperative examination 1-2 days, surgery – on the 3rd day, postoperative follow up – 7 days).
